The QUEEN ROSE Cooling Air Flow Pregnancy Pillow has more than 20,000 rave reviews from expectant mothers and with extremely good reason. This pillow has gotten me through many sleepless nights during pregnancy.

The pillow is shaped like a large U, which allows expectant mothers to fit it to their specific needs. You can use the bottom of the “U” as a headrest and the sides provide support to your lower back and growing belly. Or flip the pillow around to elevate your feet as you sleep. The QUEEN ROSE pillow is designed to follow the shape of your pregnant body.

The cover is made of a velvety soft material that is removable for easy washing. The pillow itself maintains its shape and fluffiness for long use.

Most importantly, in my opinion, this pillow promotes side sleeping. Pre-pregnancy, I was a back sleeper, and no matter how many pillows I propped myself up with, I always ended up rolling onto my back when sleeping. Doctors recommend avoiding back sleep as it puts too much pressure and weight on your growing uterus and vena cava, which is the main vein that carries blood from your lower body back to your heart.

The sides of this pillow can be used to tuck up and under your back to provide great support from rolling. If you switch positions at night, you also won’t have to rearrange several pillows in your groggy state because the panels provide both front and back support.

One downside: this top pregnancy pillow is extremely large and takes up some serious real estate in your bed. But it is absolutely worth it for a good night’s rest!

We’ve discussed U-shaped and C-shaped maternity pillows. Now let’s talk about the L-shaped pillow from Marine Moon.

An L-shaped pillow is essentially half of a U-shaped pillow, meaning it takes up less room in bed than a U-shaped pillow. This is a great option if you have a bed smaller than a queen size.

Marine Moon’s patented L-shaped body pillow is designed to replace the need for multiple bed pillows.

The pillow has a thoughtfully designed contour neck filled with memory foam to form specifically to the user. The long body pillow is stuffed with hypoallergenic fiberfill that is extra soft.

The Marine Moon L-shaped pillow may be for you if you were a side sleeper pre-pregnancy and are not looking for back support or if you do not mind shifting the pillow as you switch sides.

FAQs – Memory Foam Pregnancy Pillows

Which is better for pregnancy: a U-Shaped or C-Shaped pillow?

This comes down to a matter of preference and your sleeping habits prior to becoming pregnant.

U-shaped pillows offer support to both your belly and back, while C-shaped pillows offer support to one side only. However, U-shaped pillows are larger and bulkier than C-shaped pillows.

My best advice for back sleepers is to invest in a good U-shaped pillow. This will help you sleep and stay asleep on your side, which is recommended by doctors (more on the reason behind why below in the next question).

If you were already comfortable sleeping on your side before you became pregnant, then a C-shaped pillow for extra support under your belly and between your knees may be all that you need to stay comfortable during the night.

If you need an option for daytime, check out our best donut pillow for pregnancy review.

What are the benefits of a U-Shaped and C-Shaped pregnancy pillow?

While you may be hesitant to invest in a U-shaped or C-shaped pregnancy pillow due to its size, price, and length of use, consider how helpful they can be for sleep-deprived expectant mothers. Large pregnancy body pillows offer wonderful benefits to back sleepers, stomach sleepers, women carrying multiples, plus-sized women, and more.

First and foremost, doctors recommend you sleep on your side during pregnancy, specifically your left side. This is much harder to do if you are normally a back or stomach sleeper! When you sleep on your back, the entire weight of your growing baby and uterus rests on your back and vena cava, the main vein that carries blood back to the heart from your lower body. Chances are, if you inadvertently roll to your back in your sleep, you will wake up a short time later because it becomes an uncomfortable position as your belly grows.

Sleeping with a U-shaped or C-shaped pillow can provide gentle support on your spine to simulate the feeling of back sleeping. Same for stomach sleepers: hugging a full-length body pillow can mimic the effect of tummy sleeping.

Full body maternity pillows can also help relieve sciatica, knee pain, and leg swelling. U-shaped and C-shaped pillows are particularly helpful for women carrying multiples, as their bodies grow faster and larger than expectant mothers carrying singletons.

Plus-sized women may find C-shaped pillows a bit more comfortable, as they are more flexible and smaller in size, and less restricting than a U-shaped pillow.

What is the best pregnancy pillow for hip pain?

A full body pillow that you can comfortably place between your knees is going to be best to help relieve hip pain during pregnancy. If hip pain is your only big problem area, then a full body pillow rather than a U-shaped or C-shaped pillow may be enough to keep you comfortable.

What is the best pregnancy pillow for back pain?

A wedge pillow that you can place between your knees or behind your back is best to help relieve back pain during pregnancy. Find one that is easy to maneuver in your groggy state, so you can switch positions throughout the night with ease.

What is the best pregnancy pillow for stomach sleepers?

Stomach sleeping is not recommended during pregnancy because of the weight and pressure placed on your growing baby and uterus.

However, you can mimic the feeling of sleeping on your stomach safely by using a full-body pillow. Wedge pillows will not give you the same effect, so it is best to purchase a full-body memory foam pillow, U-shaped pillow, or C-shaped pillow.

Wrapping your body around the full-length pillow as you sleep can help simulate the feeling of lying on your stomach. It won’t be the same, but arguably, it will be the next best thing!

What is the best pregnancy pillow for back sleepers?

If you are primarily a back sleeper, it is crucial to have pillow support behind you to keep you from rolling onto your back in the middle of the night. Now, this can be achieved with normal pillows, but I find it most comfortable to have a wedge pillow or full body pillow that will stay put.

Wedge pillows come with a slight incline, making them easy to tuck under your back and stay there. When you change positions from the left to the right side during the night, you will obviously have to move the pillow back and forth.

This is why many expectant mothers like U-shaped pillows, especially if they were back sleepers prior to becoming pregnant. While they are the bulkiest option, U-shaped pillows allow you to simply change your position from left to right without having to adjust pillows. Because U-shaped pillows provide front and back support, there is no need to constantly move pillows around as you move in your sleep.

What should I consider before investing in a pregnancy pillow?

On top of all the considerations listed above (ie, back sleeper versus stomach sleeper, hip pain and/or back pain, etc.), here are some other things you should think about when searching for the best pregnancy pillow for you.

Consider space. This may seem like an afterthought, but it is actually pretty important. Most of the pillows on our list are large and take up a lot of space in the bed. The largest U-shaped pillow fits comfortably on a queen-sized mattress with a partner also sleeping in the same bed. Anything smaller than that, and you may want to consider another option for both of you to be comfortable.

Also, once you are done using the pregnancy pillow, storage is another factor. For reference, most U-shaped pillows can fit stuffed into a trash bag and roll up into the size of a sleeping bag.

Another important consideration is how easy the pillows are to clean and wash. Most come with removable, machine washable covers. It is a wonderful feature, especially if you plan on sleeping with this pillow every night during your pregnancy.

And finally, figure out if you like softer or firmer support. Memory foam offers both options. If you don’t know or can’t decide right away, not to worry. Many of the pregnancy pillows on our list are customizable. You can add or remove the memory foam stuffing to fit your needs.
